- I started to say something several times, each time ending up biting my tongue and not saying what I wanted. I'm not sure when she picked up on it; my wife and I had gotten to where we could read each other perfectly, but not Meredith and me, at least not yet.
- "You've got something on your mind," she said, moving the pot of vegetables from the stove. We were at her house tonight, and we'd easily moved into cooking and living together, even though it had only been a couple of weeks.
- I sighed. "I talked with Loretta today."
